Ray J's Thoughts:
"Fear Street: Prom Queen" takes audiences back to the cursed town of Shadyside, in 1988. Shadyside High School's senior prom is on the horizon, and when the "it girls" competing begin to disappear, an outsider, Lori Granger (played by India Fowler), also in the running (who carries a complicated past), soon finds out how hellish this HS prom will truly be.
Story time:
The summer of 2021 was quite a fun time - I praised Netflix for the unique & exciting "Fear Street" trilogy that released on the streaming service - "Fear Street: 1994", "Fear Street: 1978" and "Fear Street: 1666", all close to 2 hour full length feature throwback horror movies - came to Netflix three back to back to back Friday's in July 2021. To this day I rave about how no other streaming service has done anything like that. All three are connected brilliantly, critically acclaimed and loved by audiences. Now here we are almost 4 years later with a new standalone movie set in the late 80's, which should've made for a fun time at least. Right? Right? Wrong! This is the most disappointed I've been with a film in quite some time. Although it's still connected to the other three films, with little sprinkles of reference here and there - it sure doesn't feel like it.
I'm all about some ludicrous campy horror - especially set in the freaking 80's - but this did not work for me AT ALL. The characters are boring & emotionless. The kills are quick, and kind of gory, but there's just no substance to back up anything. Clocking in at not even 90 minutes, the film is an absolute generic snooze fest. I truly can't believe it and I'm devastated at how bad this is.
There is also brief mid credits scene that may be connecting the original trilogy further (and possibly setting up another movie).
If you're a horror fan and haven't seen the Fear Street: 1994, 1978 and 1666 trilogy, I HIGHLY recommend you watch those, and not even make an attempt with this one. After almost four years, you would think this would be a better & more satisfying entry, but NOPE! I am heartbroken that I, unfortunately, can't recommend "Fear Street: Prom Queen"
